What to use to clean a granite sink? Practical tips

Keeping the sink clean is not just a matter of your kitchen’s aesthetics, but also of hygiene. Granite sinks are highly durable and feature an elegant design, but like all sanitary fixtures, they can still get dirty. When that happens, unsightly stains can appear on their porous surface, and harmful bacteria often accumulate. Fortunately, there are several effective ways to neutralize dirt and germs. In this article, we explain how to clean granite sinks effectively.

Keeping the sink clean is not only about the aesthetic look of your kitchen, but also about hygiene. Granite sinks are highly durable and feature an elegant design, but like all sanitary fixtures, they can also get dirty. Unsightly stains can appear on their porous surface and, quite often, harmful bacteria can accumulate too. Fortunately, there are several effective ways to neutralise dirt and microorganisms. In this article, we explain how to clean granite sinks effectively.

What sets a granite sink apart?

A granite sink is essentially a basin made from a composite of quartz and epoxy resin. It’s the mineral component that gives these sanitary fixtures their raw, stone-like appearance. On the market you’ll mostly find single- or double-bowl kitchen sinks, most often with additional draining boards.

Quartz sinks are resistant to high temperatures and deformation caused by any impacts. In addition, they fit perfectly with the aesthetic of modern homes and complete stylish design schemes.

Prevention first: maintaining a granite sink

Interestingly, granite sinks can be maintained with suitable plant-based products. It’s worth doing, especially if the sink comes into contact with staining fruit, vegetables or drinks.

Specialist care products for granite sinks penetrate the material, bringing out the colour, masking fine scratches and adding shine. As an alternative to professional products, you can use a tablespoon of household cooking oil spread evenly over the sink’s surface. Olive oil, coconut oil, or even standard sunflower or rapeseed oil will work well.

How to clean a granite sink: tips

And what if we didn’t protect the sink, or the sealing proved insufficient? In that case, there’s nothing for it but to clean the stains using tried-and-tested, safe methods.

What should you use to wash a granite sink? First, reach for a concentrated washing-up liquid. Often, seemingly worrying dirt turns out to be only surface stains. In that case, a sponge and a standard degreaser can prove helpful.

If this method isn’t effective enough, you may need to use stronger products such as cream cleaners and sprays intended for kitchen cleaning. We especially recommend eco-friendly products – they deliver equally satisfying results as well-known, intensive cleaners while having a less destructive impact on our environment.

Do it yourself: home methods for cleaning a granite sink

When your quartz sink gets dirty, it’s definitely worth trying home stain-removal methods. They turn out to be really effective!

What can you clean a granite sink with if you don’t want to spend a fortune on shop-bought products? Start with a mix of water and vinegar (1:1). The mixture works brilliantly for removing limescale deposits. It’s often effective on ordinary stains too.

Another popular method favoured by our grannies is to use bicarbonate of soda. Add a little water to make a cleaning paste that will successfully tackle unsightly streaks.

What to avoid when cleaning a granite sink?

When washing a granite sink, you shouldn’t use wire scourers or very hard sponges. Pads that are too abrasive can damage the quartz surface. For the same reason, it’s better to avoid cream cleaners containing scrubbing particles, as well as pumice stones.

Contrary to appearances, granite sinks are easy to keep clean and don’t require specialist products. That’s why they’re hugely popular and widely appreciated by designers and users of modern kitchens!
