Stainless steel is a popular material used for many items in our homes, for example sinks, kitchen appliances, and most commonly bathroom taps. While it’s durable and corrosion-resistant, stainless steel isn’t scratch-proof. Looking for effective, at-home ways to remove scratches from stainless steel? We’re happy to help! See how to care for chrome-plated taps to avoid scratches and discolouration.

Causes of scratches on stainless steel

Scratches on stainless steel can appear for many reasons. When it comes to basin taps, the most common causes are:

  • everyday use — regular use of items made from stainless steel leads to fine scratches you might not even notice at first;
  • improper cleaning and maintenance — using sponges that are too hard or abrasive cleaners can damage the surface;
  • using the wrong cleaning tools — metal brushes and sharp tools can leave permanent marks on stainless steel.

How to avoid scratches?

To avoid scratches on stainless steel, follow a few simple rules:

  • clean correctly — always use soft sponges or microfibre cloths to clean the surface of basin taps. Avoid metal brushes and overly hard tools;
  • choose the right cleaners — use gentle products designed for stainless steel. Avoid abrasive products that can damage the surface;
  • maintain regularly — regular cleaning and maintenance will help keep your basin taps in good condition for longer.

Home remedies for removing scratches from chrome

If scratches have appeared on your chrome bathroom taps, don’t worry! There are effective, at-home ways to remove them. And importantly, you can do it with products you likely already have at home. What exactly should you use?

To remove scratches from chrome basin taps, you can use:

  • bicarbonate of soda paste — bicarbonate of soda is a great cleaner that can help remove fine scratches, especially those caused by limescale streaks. Just mix the bicarbonate of soda with a little water to make a paste. Gently rub the paste into the scratch with a soft cloth, then rinse and dry the surface;
  • toothpaste — ordinary toothpaste (not gel) can also help remove fine scratches. Apply a small amount to a soft cloth and gently rub into the scratch in circular motions. Then rinse the paste off with water and dry the surface;
  • vinegar and olive oil — vinegar is an excellent cleaner that can help with minor scratches. Mix vinegar with olive oil in a 1:1 ratio. Apply the mixture to the scratch and gently rub with a soft cloth. Then rinse and dry the surface.

Always test each method on a small, inconspicuous area first. That way, you’ll be sure it won’t cause any additional damage to your tap.

A gleaming basin tap

Scratches on stainless steel and chrome bathroom taps can be a nuisance, but simple home methods can remove them effectively. Remember correct cleaning and maintenance to prevent new damage. Regularly cleaning chrome with vinegar and olive oil, using a bicarbonate of soda paste or toothpaste are just some of the ways to keep stainless steel and chrome taps in top condition. However, if the scratches are deep and home methods aren’t enough, consider professional polishing.

Take care of your bathroom taps so you can enjoy their beautiful appearance for a long time. Use gentle cleaners and soft cloths, and your taps will look as good as new.
