The interiors market offers a wide range of products in terms of models and the materials used to make them. Choosing the most suitable shower tray should take into account not only individual preferences and budget, but also other, equally important factors. Chief among these are the technical possibilities, i.e. the location of the waste outlet and the height to the waste connection. These usually determine the final dimensions and shape of the tray you buy, which can come in different colours and be made of steel, acrylic, composite or so‑called liquid marble. The visual aspects are therefore entirely chosen to suit the user’s taste.
Taking only the technical aspects into account, during a renovation the simplest option is to place the new tray where the previous one was, bearing in mind the position of the waste connection and the location of the outlet. When designing a new home, however, far more options are available.
The installation of a low-profile tray, a high one (on polystyrene, a special frame or adjustable feet), or a conglomerate tray differs considerably. Compact-type trays are most often installed directly on the floor. Sometimes, however, the tray is recessed into the screed to the height of the tiles instead. This usually happens when the waste and the entire installation are located very low. It creates the effect of a so‑called level‑access, threshold‑free shower enclosure. Meanwhile, a deep 90×90 shower tray works well when the waste inlet is positioned much higher. Although most models can be set on the floor, this isn’t always the best solution. The main reason is water penetrating walls and floors, leading to mould and mildew. To prevent this, it’s worth learning the key issues around properly locating and installing the shower tray.
A crucial issue to pay special attention to is where you install the shower tray. In a renovation, the best solution will be to place it in the previous location. When designing an interior from scratch, though, you can freely decide on the most advantageous layout of all bathroom fittings. Even without a predetermined spot, it’s worth positioning the shower enclosure against a wall, in a corner or in a recess, definitely close to the waste connection and, to avoid future problems, on a screed laid with ceramic tiles.
Fitting the waste trap is also very important. Match it to the flexible pipe and connect it to the waste system right at the start, taking care with the seals, which, if bent and deformed, could cause leaks in future. If the pipe is too long, you can cut it with a hacksaw. Remember, replacing the trap in the shower tray during a bathroom refurb is key!
Setting aside the purely technical aspects, the user can tailor the remaining parameters to their own taste. In terms of type, you can choose shallow or deep trays. And, considering the bathroom space and your own vision for the interior, you can opt for square, rectangular, quadrant (quarter-circle plan) and asymmetrical versions. The choice of shape and dimensions should also be well thought out because, to ensure maximum showering comfort, it must take into account the build of other people who will be using it.
You’ve surely noticed that installing a shower tray isn’t very complicated, and that your choice should be guided mainly by your preferences. If you prioritise functionality, a deeper one will be ideal, as it offers more possibilities. If you want the showering area to feel more contemporary, order a flat or conglomerate (stone‑resin) tray, which serves above all as a decorative feature.
