The appropriate height of the toilet bowl as a key aspect of comfort when using the toilet

When planning a bathroom renovation, it’s worth considering not only the visual aspects but also all the technical ones. Among these, the dimensions of the sanitary fixtures play a key role. When planning a bathroom renovation, it’s worth considering not only the visuals but also every technical aspect. Among these, the dimensions of sanitaryware play a key role. Chosen to suit both the size of the room and the people using it, they can boost not only the appeal of the space but also user comfort. In this article you’ll learn what the optimal height of a WC pan is and what to bear in mind when choosing one. Enjoy the read!

The convenience of a WC pan

Because users vary in height even when using the same sanitaryware, more and more people opt for an optimal solution. These are bathroom products with adjustable height. They’re used not only in multigenerational homes, but also in facilities such as care homes, hospitals and hotels. Among these are WC pans. An adjustable toilet height ensures comfort and convenience during hygiene routines for shorter people, people with disabilities, children, as well as taller or larger‑built users.

However, it’s not always possible to adjust the height of the toilet pan. That’s where universal frames for mounting wall‑hung pans from any manufacturer come in. Putting together sets to your own taste lets you fit out a comfortable toilet in an attractive style. A clear advantage of wall‑hung WC pans is the lack of visible installation. Like the cistern, it’s concealed behind the wall cladding.

Types of toilet pans

Toilets can broadly be divided into two basic categories. The first, familiar to most people for many years, are traditional units that stand directly on the floor. The second, much more modern, is the wall‑hung WC pan.

The difference between them isn’t just looks and aesthetics, but also the aforementioned ability to adjust the distance between the pan and the floor. In the first option the outlet height does not change. The toilet is fixed permanently to the floor. With the wall‑hung version, however, the height can be tailored to a specific user thanks to a special frame, usually screwed to the wall and less often to the floor. Special bolts used for installation allow the frame to be spaced out from the wall surface.

Mounting height of a WC pan

Installing a WC pan, contrary to popular belief, isn’t complicated. It mainly requires correct installation of the frame to which it is attached. On some models the height of the WC pan can be adjusted. Even so, it’s sensible to position it to standard dimensions, i.e. at an average height of 45–50 cm above the finished floor.

Another option is to set about 21–23 cm from the centreline of the waste pipe to the floor, which directly translates to the top edge of the WC pan hanging about 40–42 cm above the floor. The height at which a wall‑hung WC pan is positioned should mainly depend on users’ individual preferences.

If older people or people with disabilities also use the bathroom, it’s worth making sure the Geberit height from the floor is a little higher, around 46–47 cm above the tiles. This would improve their comfort and ease of use.

It’s a little different for a urinal and a bidet. The former should be set at about 65 cm above the floor, while the latter with the top edge at 42 cm.

As you can see, comfort when using the toilet is closely tied to the mounting height of the WC pan and other sanitaryware. Therefore, before choosing the final product, discuss this in detail with other household members, and also consult the seller about the pan to rule out incompatibility with your frame. That way you’ll avoid unnecessary expense and enjoy a wall‑hung toilet, a hit in recent years.
