Planning a bathroom renovation, or already in the middle of one? Wondering how to design the space so it’s not only eye-catching but also functional? Start with the basics. Focus on choosing, purchasing and installing the key sanitary fixtures such as the bathroom washbasin, bath or shower. In this article, you’ll find the essentials on proper fixing and setting the right height for the washbasin in your bathroom. Ready for a hefty dose of know-how? Let’s get started!
What’s the best height for a washbasin? Many of us ask that question. Unfortunately, there’s no single right answer. Above all, it depends on who will be using the newly renovated bathroom. Will it be only healthy adults, small children and older and disabled users, or perhaps people who are taller than average? The key to success—and to your and your loved ones’ satisfaction—is to take all the relevant criteria into account.
When tailoring the key parameters of the bathroom washbasin, don’t just look at the material it’s made from and the colour, but also its width and height. Only by considering the build and abilities of the people using the bathroom, bathroom washbasins can be installed at the right height. The correct distance from the floor allows comfortable washing for both able-bodied people and small children, as well as those who have difficulty moving around and carrying out many personal hygiene tasks. So, let’s get down to specifics…
When you decide to replace a washbasin or another sanitary fixture, you can take inspiration from a publication created almost half a century ago. It is titled Technical Conditions for the Execution and Acceptance of Construction and Assembly Works: Sanitary and Industrial Installations. According to it, basins should be positioned about 75–80 cm above the floor. However, it’s worth making small—centimetre-level—adjustments to those dimensions, factoring in, among other things, people’s currently higher average height. Thanks to these minor changes, using the basin will be extremely comfortable for most of us. At present, the optimal height from the floor for a wall-hung model is around 85 cm. It’s similar in the other case. A countertop washbasin should have the top edge of its rim about 85–90 cm above the floor. Accordingly, the worktop itself then needs to be set correspondingly lower. A sensible approach is to calculate the difference between the rim height and the overall height of the basin. On that basis, it’s easy to specify all the remaining parameters.
Despite appearances, installing a bathroom washbasin isn’t as complicated as it may seem. You can do it yourself. All you need is the right knowledge, preparation and all the necessary materials. To that end, carefully check all the pipes supplying cold and hot water to the tap. You should also have sanitary silicone at the ready. If you’re worried you might get something wrong, don’t proceed on your own. To be sure everything is done correctly, you can call in a specialist team that handles this type of work.
When fitting out a bathroom in a home with small children, the best solution is to buy a dedicated step stool, which will greatly help a child use the basin. For seniors and people with disabilities, a sensible choice is to provide a pull-out basin together with the worktop edges, so there’s no need to move aside a mobility aid, e.g. a wheelchair.
To sum up, when buying any sanitary fixtures, first and foremost consider your own and your loved ones’ individual needs and adjust the height of the fittings accordingly. With the right choices, you’ll ensure the highest level of safety and comfort for users.
