Designing a bathroom can be a headache — especially when it comes to choosing the right elements for the scheme. Which ones should you pick so they’re as practical as they are attractive? There are plenty of options, so how do you focus on the most sensible? In this article, we’ll walk you through the types of toilet pans and their features. See which types stand out, and making the final decision will be easier. Enjoy the read!

Types of toilet pans

A WC pan is an essential part of any toilet, so buying one isn’t up for debate. The only thing to consider is its type. A range of models is available, which can be categorised on the basis of several criteria.

The most popular way to divide toilet pans is by how they’re installed. These include:

  • high‑level or low‑level toilets;
  • close‑coupled toilets;
  • wall‑hung toilets.

The first type is now practically unused because of the space it takes up. A WC with a high‑ or low‑level cistern consisted of two parts — the pan and the cistern were separate, which meant the two had to be installed a considerable distance apart. Many people consider this type outdated, associated mainly with bathrooms from years gone by.

Close‑coupled pans are a fairly popular solution, consisting of a pan that sits on the floor with the cistern mounted on it. It takes up considerably less space in the bathroom than the first variant and, for many, is more convenient to use thanks to the easier‑to‑reach flush.

The last, and currently most popular, model is the wall‑hung WC pan. This type of toilet features a pan suspended from the wall and a concealed frame, which is completely invisible once installed. This solution is ideal for toilets where every centimetre counts — it makes even a small space feel larger. And what’s more, it looks much nicer.

WC pan: which one to choose?

Wondering which WC pan will be best for your toilet? Much depends on your preferences. If you don’t mind the cistern being on show, you can opt for a close‑coupled toilet. If you see that as outdated and prefer modern, elegant solutions, a wall‑hung toilet pan will be the better option.

What should you consider when choosing a WC pan? Above all, the dimensions of the toilet pan are important. A toilet pan typically comes in similar sizes regardless of type — most often around 50 cm in length and 35 cm in width, while the height depends on the model. How much space can you dedicate to it in your toilet? Before you go to the shop, measure the spot where it will be installed, and your purchase is sure to be a good one.

If you’re going for a wall‑hung model, there’s one more important aspect to keep in mind. Wall‑hung WC: how many kg can it support? This is very important if people with a larger build will be using it. Most frames for wall‑hung pans are highly durable, and you’ll find some that can handle loads of up to 400 kg. But does every pan fit every frame? You need to be careful here — it’s definitely a better idea to buy from a single manufacturer. That way you can be 100% sure it will be compatible.

What’s the best toilet pan for a bathroom? Certainly one that’s not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. That’s why it’s worth paying attention to its look as well. What style are you planning for the toilet — minimal, classic, or glamour? For a simple scheme, choose a plain white pan in gloss or matt. And if you want something more eye‑catching, consider a model in black, gold, or with an intriguing mosaic or granite pattern.

Pay attention to the shapes of toilet pans, too. There are semi‑circular models as well as those with more angular lines. Pair it with the right toilet seat and the whole set will look great.
