Is your bathroom missing a touch of greenery? Have you decided to liven up the space with plants? Before you bring any in, make sure the room is right for the plants you have in mind. Which ones should you choose? Where should you place them so they look stunning without getting in the way? We’ve some tips below!

Plants in the bathroom — is that a good idea?

Flowers, no matter the room they’re placed in, create an amazing atmosphere. They suit every style and colour palette, and they bring any scheme to life. It’s no surprise, then, that you’ll find them in bathrooms as often as in living rooms or bedrooms. Are plants in the bathroom a good idea? Absolutely! You just need to remember to choose the right ones.

Natural or artificial plants for the bathroom?

One of the most common dilemmas when buying plants for the bathroom is whether to go for live ones or artificial. There are many aspects every plant lover needs to consider. Don’t pick plants for the bathroom just because you like them or because they fit the space dimension‑wise. They may not stand the test of time. The key criterion should be the conditions in your bathroom.

What plants suit a windowless bathroom?

A plant for a bathroom without a window needs to cope with little to no light for most of the day. If you want live plants, choose shade‑loving species. Which plants work for a dark bathroom? Peace lily, ferns and anthurium are good options. They’re ideal because they love humidity and don’t mind the lack of constant light.

If, however, you’re dreaming of completely different plants for a dark, windowless bathroom, yet you know they won’t survive in a dim, humid room, artificial alternatives will be the better choice. Artificial plants will look beautiful all year round despite the lack of sunlight, and you won’t have to remember to water them. What’s more — this way you can have any species you like in the bathroom.

What plants suit a bathroom with a window?

Having a window in the bathroom greatly broadens your styling options in terms of greenery. In such a space, plants that like diffused light and high humidity will thrive. Think showy monstera, calathea, epipremnum or spider plant.

Where should you place plants in the bathroom?

The placement of plants in the bathroom will largely depend on whether they’re live or artificial. That’s not the only factor, though — the free space you can devote to them matters too.

Place live, light‑loving plants simply on the windowsill. Larger specimens, such as a monstera, set on the floor near the window or opposite it — so that the sun’s rays reach them. You’ll have much more flexibility with artificial plants.

Small specimens work brilliantly as ideal decor for bathroom shelves. Placed near neatly folded towels, under the mirror or beside a basket full of toiletries, they’ll become a beautiful accent that will surely catch the eye of anyone using the bathroom. What’s more — a touch of greenery will make the room cosier, helping everyone at home relax even more during an evening bath.

Plants in the bathroom can also be used to add interest, for example around the toilet area. Have you a boxed‑in concealed cistern? Rolls of paper placed on it are certainly practical, but are they aesthetically pleasing? Move the toilet paper into a cupboard, and in its place set a tasteful potted plant on the boxed‑in frame. The space will undoubtedly look more pleasant.
