Many of us run into various challenges when designing a bathroom — especially when we’re choosing the individual fittings ourselves. How can you avoid pitfalls? The first, and one of the most important, steps is to think carefully about your needs. Are you about to buy a basin trap for your bathroom? Not sure what to look out for to make sure it’s the right one? We’re happy to help! Read on.
A bathroom basin is a cornerstone of the room’s fittings. It lets us use running water comfortably. However, to ensure water can also drain away efficiently from this type of bowl, a component that enables it is essential. That component is the basin trap.
The trap connects the basin to the waste pipe, allowing used water to be discharged. It also has another, equally important function — its special design prevents unpleasant odours from the drainage system entering the bathroom. There are various types of basin traps available, making it easier to match them to the other elements.
A countertop basin is mounted on a counter, which very often isn’t enclosed in any way. With no vanity unit underneath, the connected trap will be fully visible to users of the bathroom. So what should you consider to buy a basin trap that’s as practical as it is attractive?
Traps are most commonly divided by their construction into P-traps and bottle traps. The first type, P-traps, are U-shaped, which makes them very effective at draining water. This design also prevents dirt from building up inside, so it doesn’t require frequent maintenance. It does have a significant downside — it’s not especially attractive, so it won’t be ideal in bathrooms with countertop basins where the trap is left on show. If you’re set on this arrangement, you’ll need to consider fitting a vanity unit to conceal it.
A bottle trap, as the name suggests, is bottle-shaped. Its vertical construction is often more convenient than P-traps because it takes up less space. It also looks much smarter and can serve as a stylish feature in an elegant bathroom, so it’s a good choice for countertop basins. Do keep in mind, though, that this shape calls for regular cleaning, as debris can accumulate inside.
Once you’ve settled on a specific type, the next step is to choose the right dimensions. This is very important, because the practicality of the entire basin depends on it. A trap for a small basin or for a large one? If the trap’s diameter is too small or too large, it won’t match the basin outlet and water may leak as it drains away. To avoid this, check in advance what size you need.
The answer depends on what bathroom elements you’ve already purchased. A half-trap will only work if it’s connected to a waste that’s integrated with the basin mixer tap. If your mixer doesn’t include this, you’ll need a complete trap with all the required components.
Don’t forget about the trap’s look if you’re choosing a model that will be visible beneath an unenclosed countertop basin. You’ll find interesting options in our online shop. How do you pick the best one?
Think about the colour palette that dominates your bathroom. Should the trap for your countertop basin blend in, or act as a striking contrast? A classic choice that suits any style and colour scheme will certainly be a white or silver trap. If you want to catch the eye, go for a matt black option, polished gold or rose gold. Choose what suits your taste and the result will be as practical as it is attractive!
Now that you know which trap to choose, are you wondering how to fit a basin trap? It’s quite simple and you should manage it yourself without specialist tools. Just follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Connect all the parts, fit the seals and make sure everything is watertight. And you’re done!
