Planning a full bathroom renovation and wondering what features you can add? Installing a wall-mounted linear drain is an interesting solution that will give your bathroom a modern touch. A linear drain: https://lazienka-rea.com.pl/prysznicowe-odplywy-liniowe.html also saves space, as you can use it instead of a traditional shower enclosure with a tray. If you want to learn how to install a linear drain correctly, this article is for you!

What is a linear drain?

A linear drain is a component whose main purpose is to channel away water. It’s most often used as a replacement for a floor drain grate. Linear drains are a popular solution, especially in bathrooms with a contemporary design. That’s because more and more people are opting for shower enclosures without a tray, gaining extra space and freedom in how they arrange the room.

Linear drain – step-by-step installation

The first step is to check whether there are any technical obstacles that would prevent you from installing a linear drain. Bear in mind that, depending on the manufacturer, the build-up typically requires 70–80 mm of height.

If you’re not an experienced professional, choose a ready-made installation kit. The choice, however, shouldn’t be random. Pay particular attention to the drain’s maximum flow rate and compare it with the flow rate of the shower head. No less important is the build quality, which affects the kit’s price. If long-term reliability matters to you, pick a higher-end kit to avoid frequent and costly repairs. Also check the height of the siphon cassette — the lower it is, the easier it will be to fit it into the floor.

How to seat the linear drain?

The next step is to prepare the waste outlet. Remember that the linear drain should be located higher than the point where the waste pipe connection is made. You can embed the linear drain in the wall or in the floor. In the latter case, it’s best to place it directly beneath the shower panel.

The linear drain grate is essentially a cover strip. It should be set so the water-collecting grate sits 1 mm below the level of the floor tiles. Once that’s done, you can install the cassette. Be sure to check that it’s seated correctly — use a spirit level.

Preparing the screed

Ideally, fit the linear drain before the floor screed is poured. Then, at the intended drain location, chisel out a recess to a depth suited to the drain’s size. Next, you can start preparing the screed. At this stage, you must allow for the height difference between the floor and the drain. This way, water will flow towards the drain instead of flooding the entire room.

When preparing the screed, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, which will certainly be included with your installation kit as instructions.

Waterproofing

This is the final stage of installing the linear drain. To ensure proper substrate isolation, apply a liquid membrane. It’s a product designed to seal and protect surfaces from unwanted water exposure. After applying each coat, wait 2–3 hours for the membrane to dry.

During this step, remember to fit the collar supplied with the drainage cassette. This component ensures the waterproofing remains stable.

Height of the shower mixer in a linear-drain shower

At what height should you mount the shower mixer in a linear-drain shower? It’s an individual matter, closely tied to the height of household members. The most universal solution is to mount it 110–135 cm above the floor.

Linear drain – how far from the wall?

The decision about the distance of the linear drain from the wall should be guided by the total length of the channel. The distance from the wall should be 2–3 cm more on each side than the length of the drain itself.
