A small bathroom is undoubtedly a design challenge for anyone about to fit it out. A bath or a shower, a washbasin and a toilet, plus a washing machine and even a laundry basket – how do you fit all that into a dozen or so square metres? And how do you box in the pipes in the bathroom so they don’t spoil the meticulously planned aesthetic? Today we’ll let you in on a few tricks!
Boxing in the pipes in a bathroom is first and foremost a step towards making the whole interior look cohesive and tidy. Even the most modern and meticulously finished scheme can be ruined by protruding, visible pipes.
Concealing pipes also has a practical side. Hidden plumbing means fewer nooks and surfaces where dust accumulates. You gain a functional space that you can easily keep clean.
There are a few ways to do this, but the most popular is boxing in with plasterboard. This method lets you create extra storage in the bathroom for cosmetics or toiletries. This approach is particularly popular when enclosing concealed in-wall frames for WC, as well as when hiding waste pipes from WCs and bidets.
Importantly, this type of boxing can be finished successfully with virtually any finishing material, for example tiling. That’s why it’s also so often used to conceal pipes from baths or showers.
Linear drain can be easily concealed with dedicated covers designed for this purpose. They’re also a good choice for boxing in the pipes in the bathroom from washbasins. These covers are most often made of plastic and come in decorative forms. As such, they can even be treated as mouldings. With their help you’ll likely have no trouble creating your dream interior in a defined style.
No matter which type of boxing you choose, remember to ensure access to their strategic sections, for example joints or elbows. A good solution will be access panels. This way, in the event of a potential failure, you’ll have quick access to the installation without having to chisel off tiles or remove the covers. This approach also lets you keep an eye on the condition of the pipes and react early at the first worrying signs of leaks.
Looking for something truly original that will work primarily as interior decoration? If the pipes run vertically, you can successfully cover them with a decorative plant.
How to do it? It’s simple! Place special hooks close to the installation, on which you’ll mount hanging pots with trailing plants. Their vines will quickly wrap around the pipe and make a charming addition to the bathroom. This kind of concealment is non-invasive and, if needed, will give you quick and hassle-free access to the pipes.
Equally useful here can be plant stands in the form of single, small bases, metal baskets, or simply bamboo mats that you wrap around the pipe.
It’s a bit easier in loft and industrial-style bathrooms. In that case you can treat the installation as a distinctive feature and a characteristic accent. Just paint it with matt black paint and you’re done!
Properly executed pipe boxing in a small bathroom will not only help you hide unsightly pipework. It’s also a great way to gain extra storage space for cosmetics, cleaning products or toiletries.
Do remember to retain the ability to inspect the installation despite the boxing. This way you’ll avoid nasty surprises in the future and, if necessary, you’ll have easy access to the pipes. Choose the solution that suits you best today and enjoy a neat yet practical bathroom. And see for yourself that even in a small room you can create something truly unique and functional!
