There is no doubt that choosing the right bathroom basin always comes with a host of dilemmas. First of all, you need to decide whether you prefer a countertop basin or an undermount one, then choose a suitable tap, and of course match the size of the basin to the dimensions of your bathroom. Although it’s not a simple task, don’t be discouraged—patiently browse different basin models. These days there are so many on the market that everyone can easily find something that suits them.
There’s no doubt that choosing the right washbasin for a bathroom always comes with a fair few dilemmas. First of all, you need to decide whether you prefer a freestanding basin, a countertop model, or an undermount one, and then choose a suitable tap for it and, of course, match the size of the basin to the size of the bathroom. While it’s not an easy task, it’s worth persevering and patiently reviewing different basin models. There are so many on the market now that everyone can easily find something to suit.
It’s worth remembering that regardless of the width of basin you choose, you realistically need at least 70 centimetres for it so you can move freely while washing, brushing your hair, or shaving. The most optimal option is therefore a basin at least 60–70 centimetres wide, plus about 5 centimetres on either side.
Basins that sit on the worktop, wall-hung basins, or inset basins can be a little narrower than standard, even roughly 40–45 centimetres across. In that case, some of the function is taken on by the worktop or console, which serves as a kind of support for the basin. The rule of thumb, however, is that the narrower the basin, the deeper it should be — and vice versa. Only then will it be comfortable and functional.
A countertop basin leaves more space under the worktop and lets you fit, for example, a cabinet or a drawer there. An undermount basin, on the other hand, has the opposite effect — less room under the worktop, but also fewer hard-to-reach nooks that are difficult to clean thoroughly by conventional means. Choosing a specific model is largely a matter of personal preference and usually comes down to aesthetics.
If the layout means the trap will be visible, it’s worth opting for a decorative model. If you plan to place a cabinet under the worktop, it’s best for the trap to be as compact as possible. An ideal solution includes a trap with a silicone membrane, which not only blocks unpleasant odours but also prevents water backflow, so it partly functions like an air admittance valve.
Above all, make sure the tap isn’t positioned too close to the wall or the edge of the basin. It’s also worth investing in a good-quality tap, as it’s the hardest-working fitting in the entire bathroom. The cheapest models are a false economy that may require further spending after a year or two.
