Grout: what is it? Is it a must in the bathroom?

A bathroom needs to be designed to suit the conditions that prevail there. High humidity, higher temperatures and water splashing about are all factors in which laminate flooring, ordinary paint or wallpaper just won’t cut it. So durable tiles are a must, with the gaps between them filled properly with grout.

The joint filler, i.e. grout, plays a key role in a bathroom. It sets and bonds the tiles correctly, and in doing so protects them. So grout in the bathroom, especially in the shower, is essential. Keeping it clean, however, isn’t easy. Different types of residue, e.g. from soap scum, get trapped in the joints. If not cleaned regularly, they build up, making them harder to remove later. So what should you use to clean grout, especially in the shower? There are several options.

How to clean grout? Here’s our advice!

What’s the best way to clean dirty grout on a bathroom floor? It can be labour-intensive, but it’s worth it. Limescale can be a pain, particularly in the shower area. Every day, residues from care products run down the tiles and quickly accumulate in the gaps, leaving the grout looking anything but fresh. There are, however, a few methods that work well for grout.

What to wash grout with? Go for home remedies!

Wondering how to refresh grout using what you’ve got at home? Just reach for a few bits you’ve likely got in the kitchen. Baking soda and vinegar will come in handy. Make a solution from these two ingredients mixed with water (a packet of baking soda, 100 ml of vinegar and 100 ml of water), then spread it over the grout in the shower. Leave it for an hour, then rinse with water. Cleaning grout with soda and vinegar should deliver the desired results and is an economical way to clean.

How do you clean white grout? A better option here may be a lemon, whose juice can effectively restore the whiteness of the joints between the tiles. Cut it in half, pop it into a glass with hot water and wait for it to release its juices. Rub this solution into the grout with a brush. You can also clean white grout with toothpaste. Spread it over the joints and leave for an hour. After that, scrub with a toothbrush and the grime will be gone.

Chemical cleaning agents for grout

What should you use to clean shower grout if home remedies haven’t done the trick? Reach for chemical cleaners with stronger action. Choose a product specifically formulated for cleaning grout. That way you’ll avoid damaging the surrounding tiles or discolouring the grout.

Cleaning grout with steam

A very effective method that doesn’t require much elbow grease is cleaning grout with steam. You’ll need a special device for this, a steam cleaner. With the right nozzle you can easily reach the dirt that collects between the tiles, and powerful bursts of steam will shift it quickly.

Look after the enclosure as well as the grout!

Once you’ve got the grout perfectly clean, take care of the look of the shower enclosure too. Streaks and marks on it are unsightly and can easily overshadow the effect you achieved by cleaning the grout. So how do you get rid of them quickly and easily? All you need is the right shower enclosure cleaner, which will deal with the grime that builds up on it. Just make sure to choose a product that not only cleans but also protects the surface of the enclosure. Hydro Fixer can be a great option. It will allow you to gently clean the shower, and the polymers it contains will also refresh the hydrophobic properties of the enclosure’s coating. Best of luck!
